The central subject matter is that of a well poised couple engaged in a rather formal dance step. They are young, indeed, and beautifully dressed in what appears to be French colonial attire. The colors are soft and subtle, yet they add good crisp depth to the picture. My photos are showing the color tones very well and the full figured portraits are against a creamy background, however, you can expect this album to look much nicer and crisper in person. The couple is framed with an elaborate raised embossed scrolling border and the outer corners of the album are decorated as well. The celluloid cover is in very good condition with a small corner wear to report, as is so common with these albums. It's quite easy to overlook but I show a photo of it below. There are but a few tiny specks of discolor and very few minimal scratches to the cover, you will have to tip the album to the light to see most of them.
The original brass hardware is nice and bright, actually very well preserved. Everything is secure to the album and is in solid working order. The outer spine and back cover is layered with a multi toned radiant blue velvet. There is, of course, some edge wear to the nap but much of the cover maintains a more than adequate presence of velvet, much more than a lot of these albums. The binding is well attached to the interior pages and the exterior of the page edges have plenty of their original gold gilt, affording the outer pages a golden glow. As you can see from this close-up, this couple is quite enchanting. A handsome twosome for sure, young and innocent, performing with ease and tenderness. The second close-up shows the small wear at the corner and the loss of velvet nap at the edges, which you will find throughout the outer edging of this album, including on the spine. Nonetheless, these little aging characteristics are to be expected and take nothing away from this endearing Victorian celluloid photograph album. The celluloid is well placed and suffers no cracks, chips or lifting, it is stable and gorgeous.
These 2 interior shots show how pleasant the album is on the inside, with it's 12 pages that have been ornately gold stenciled in classic Victorian patterns, including the cherubs centered on the 2 pages in the back of the album which hold smaller photos. The 20 larger picture openings will allow for a 4 by 6 photo and there are only a couple of slot tears in the album, so very respectable on the interior. The album also has it's paper separators that fit between the photos, from one side of the page to the other. My picture of the backside of the velvet exhibits how well maintained the overall appearance is. This album measures 10½ in height by 8¼ in width and is 1½ inches thick. This album carries good weight but is not overly heavy. If you've been searching for a well kept antique celluloid photo album with a dancing couple, please consider this Victorian example, it's a pleaser.
