This is a very distinctive and unusual antique porcelain backed portrait vanity hand mirror from the late 1800's to the turn of the 1900 era.

Although she is untitled, I will call her one of the Queen's of France, as I have no doubt that this is a Limoges hand mirror and is likely signed so on the rear of the porcelain.

Well, isn't she striking and it is very different to see a rear view profile. I don't recall ever offering one before. She is very statuesque in her pose and beautiful indeed. I wish I knew who she was. I did a fair amount of research but could not identify her. A very elegant crown is well positioned atop her swept up hair and she wears it with great confidence. She is dressed in a white robe with a wide blue collar and her jewelry has a fashionable flare. Her portrait in encircled with a gold gilt, hand applied, grape vine. The vine is applied over a light olive toned paint that has been mixed with gold gilt. In the following close-up photos, this border shows these attributes at their best and more accurately. My photos are very good and show you all the wonderful details and colors.

The gold gilt detailing on this hand mirror is very well done and has only minor paint loss or rubbing , here and there, nothing too significant. The portrait looks like it has a little rubbing of the paint, caused from laying it down on the domed porcelain side. This loss of paint is shown clearly in my photos, you can see a bit near her ear, below her earring and a bit at the edge of her blue collar.  Nonetheless, this is still a wonderful and fabulous hand mirror with lots of life. The rim and handle are made of German Silver and marked so on the rim. I have polished the metal but no too much, it looks very good with a little aged patina on it, very natural. The rims have a lovely scrolling border to the interior edge and the exterior of the rim has several dents but the rim has maintained it's round shape rather nicely. The handle is perfect, very strong and supportive and the pierced, open style is not what I usually find, in fact, I don't remember seeing one of these types of handles during the last decade.

The original beveled mirror shows a clear image and does not need to be replaced. It has a couple of age and usage related scratches but they are not very intrusive. There is a little rubbing of the glass, at the edge of the bevel, but nothing that distracts from it's usefulness.  I am showing the reflection of our dining light fixture, for clarity sake, this is a completely usable mirror and will serve your needs for a long time. This hand mirror measure approx. 9¼ in length and has a 5 inch viewing surface. I think this is a special antique Art Nouveau porcelain backed vanity hand mirror and is fit for a queen. I  would think that it's next owner could easily overlook any small flaws and discover that this is fine treasure. It is in overall, very good condition, with no damage to the porcelain. Please look at all the photos closely and consider adding it to your collection or give as an extraordinary gift.
