In over 2 decades of selling these antique hand mirrors, this is only the second time I have found and opaline backed example. This one is especially unique, in that it is fashioned in blue opaline and has all the characteristics of a transitional piece, reflecting both the Victorian and the Art Nouveau eras. The opaline glass is very pretty, sort of resembles satin glass. The tone of the blue was a little difficult to capture but I think my photos give a reasonably good depiction of the tone. The hand applied artwork is darling, delicate pink flowers and buds are well executed and the curves of the stems are delightful. The center of the apple blossoms have marvelous raised dotted detailing. The opaline glass is in amazing condition, I find no flaw, loss of paint or scratches. There will be no disappointments with this hand mirror, as it is in very fine, well kept condition.
The brass rim and handle have lovely Victorian embossed roses and leaves, as well as Art Nouveau scrolling designs, making this hand mirror an exquisite transitional piece. I have polished the metal and it glows like gold gilt, it's stunning. In my photo, it looks like some stubborn tarnish in the deeper crevices but in my hand, I cannot even see this. The rim and handle are damage and dent free, looking much nicer than my photos. The original beveled mirror is clear and basically looks perfect with barely a minute scratch, nearly pristine, ready to service your daily needs. I am showing a photo of the reflection of my leaded dining fixture, simply to display the clarity of the glass. As you can see, this is a delightful antique Victorian blue opaline backed hand mirror. It measures the standard size of approx. 9½ inches in length with a 5 inch viewing surface but there is nothing standard about it's grand appearance. It's dramatic qualities will be sure to brighten your day and add that special radiance to your dressing table. This hand mirror is an uncommon treasure and I will likely search a decade before finding another. The Victorian opaline hand mirrors are simply not readily available, grab this one while you can.
