Although Jasperware is commonly referred to as a type of porcelain, it is actually a hard, fine-grained stoneware, developed by Josiah Wedgwood. The notable unglazed matte finish and high relief medallions makes these treasures easy to recognize. My photos are very good but they just don't seem to do adequate justice to the set, you can expect it to look more charming in person. Each piece illustrates a different scene on a Wedgwood blue ground. The hand mirror presents 1 winged cherub with child, training a sweet doggie to sit up and beg. The hair brush features a single winged cherub playing a violin to a bird sitting on a nearby branch. The Jasperware backs are damaged free, no cracks or chips, when I tip these pieces to the light, I can barely detect even a rub, they are in very fine, well preserved condition.
The outer rims are marked G. Silver, for German Silver and they are in great condition, I barely feel a tiny dimple on the hair brush, otherwise, the rims are fabulous. The secure embossed handles have those Victorian roses, perfectly damage free and all of the metal maintains a strong gold gilt presence. I dare not polish this set, as I would not want to disturb a bit of this gorgeous finish. The hand mirror has a little rubbing of the gilding where the hand would hold the handle but I consider it very minor. For the most part, this set is stunning and looks a whole lot better than these photos, I believe you will not be disappointed.
The relief work on this set is lovely and the central themes are further enhanced with an approx. ½ inch wide fleur-de-lis border. I am showing lots of photos, including close-ups, so you can determine that this set is worthy. The original hand beveled mirror shows a very clear image but does have a few small dark spots toward the outer perimeter. This mirror is completely usable and has no need to be replaced any time soon. I am showing a reflective photo of the mirror for clarity sake. This set measures the standard size, approx. 9¼ in length with a 5 inch viewing surface and has a proportionately smaller brush. Although the brush is for decorative use only, the natural bristles, set in wood, are in better than average condition, they are actually quite nice and judging from the condition of the gold gilt, I would say the brush was not handled very much. Again, the condition of this vanity set is remarkable, having no significant flaws. If you like the photos, you will thoroughly enjoy owning and using this antique Jasperware hand mirror and brush set, it's both appealing in nature and a classic in Victorian fashion.
