I have researched Colibri but I find no info on their production of enameled compacts, however, Colibria is a region in Italy, this powder compact is marked made in Italy and will come to you in the Colibri box. I have spent a fair amount of time trying to find a similar compact, for comparison purposes, but I find not one enameled powder compact that compares. I believe this piece dates to the Art Nouveau era, as it has many of the characteristics of that time. Also, most of these types of compacts come from that era. I am showing you plenty of photos so you can adequately judge this piece as being what it is, a fabulously made Italian enameled compact coming from a time when elegance, style and creativity went hand in hand. The shape of this compact is imaginative, it has a good amount of what looks like gold gilding and I would imagine a compact of this quality would be decorated in that fashion.
The exterior is simply stunning, with a scene of a lounging shepherdess, accompanied by one of her flock. The central enameled scene measures 1¼ inches by ¾ of an inch and it is in excellent condition, as is the entire compact. My photos are very good and will show any tiny imperfections or manufacturing flaws, for example, the enameling in the outer border is thinner in places and missing in one tiny spot but under magnification, it does not looked chipped, as the edges are very smooth, it appears that the enameling did not fill in completely. This area is not offensive nor does it take away from the beauty of the piece or it's structural integrity. These types of compacts were hand decorated so there are natural imperfections in the making and these are to be expected.
The case is well embossed and is loaded with decorative features. I cannot detect if it is gold gilt or gold vermeil but it certainly looks like it or something very similar. There is little evidence of wear on the gold and the interior has a bit of tarnishing but I dare not fiddle with it, as it looks great just the way it is. I did barely polish one spot so I could get the signature to photograph, otherwise, I have done nothing to this outstanding compact. Overall, it measures 2¼ in width by 1½ and has a depth of nearly ¼ of an inch. The interior maintains a perfectly clear hand beveled mirror and it's original unused powder sifter. It is very apparent to the eye that this antique Italian figural enameled ladies powder compact was never used, but rather, stored away for a time when collectors could admire it's splendor. I know the next owner of this precious compact will be thrilled, if not overjoyed, to add it to their favorite enameled powder compacts.
