Yes, this beaded bag needed some tender loving care when I acquired it but I believe that my time was well spent on this gorgeous and dreamy pink knitted purse. The color is simply the very best of the pinks and I know you will agree when you have it in your hands. I started the restoration by re-threading all the fringes because they were letting go and falling off the purse. The fringes consists of approx. 14,500 cut and faceted glass beads, that's about twice as much as an average purse. That's right, you read correctly, 107 fringes having at least 135 beads on each strand. These glass beads have the color of the pink radiating from the interior of the bead, with the exterior of the bead being crystal clear. My close-up photos show the bead qualities very well. Now I'm not saying that the fringes can't be broken, but they won't be breaking because the old thread can no longer support the weight of the beads. The fringes are incredibly thick and lush, they've been worked with a double layer of thread and they measure a whopping 3¼ inches in length. After I finished the fringes, I repaired a few small snags that were in the body of the purse. I examined all of the existing threads that were used to knit this purse and discovered that they are essentially in excellent condition, soft and pliable with no signs of drying or other serious issues. Once all the beading had been restored to my satisfaction, I gave the purse a professional cleaning. The bag had already been removed from the frame, since the old attaching threads were weak and fragile. After a gentle washing, this purse came to life and since the exterior of the beads are crystal, this purse sparkles and shimmers. After drying, the purse was ready to be re-attached to the frame. And yes, the frame was polished but not enough to make it look new. There are 2, double layers of threads holding the purse securely to the frame, the second double thread attaches a row of matching pink beads which are meant to camouflage the sew holes and exposed threading. This gives the purse frame an exquisite touch of depth and distinction that adds greatly to it's personality. This row of beads looks a little crooked in the photo but in person, it appears very straight and inline, you won't be disappointed.
The 2 close-up photos of the angle-shaped, silver plated frame, shows the top having a raised embossed design and the sides a flush design but both exemplify the flowing artistry of the Art Nouveau era. The frame is structurally sound in great working order. During the fringe work, I came upon the signature bead, a pale sea green color, as shown. Often times, bead workers signed their purses with a signature bead(s), so that the business they worked for could identify their work. For the the lining, I chose a bright ivory silk with a rich and elegant paisley pattern. The lining fits perfectly and is sewn onto the frame, the embroidered lace trim is sewn onto the lining. This purse is completely stunning, it measures as follows: it is over 12 inches from the top of the kissing clasp to the tip of the fringes; it is 5⅝ inches side to side from hinge to hinge; the body of the bag without the frame and fringes is 7¾ inches in length. Although this purse has plenty of size, it will carry only your basic necessities, as any early 1900's purse would. Every aspect of this antique cranberry pink knit beaded purse has been restored to as pristine and original as possible. If you like what you see in the photos, you will love and cherish this purse. And again, the color is simply spectacular, oh yes, it's a WOW purse. Item 1-930 D $745.00 Now $665.00 Place Order via Email We Have More Antique Beaded Purses and Flapper Handbags
