This super large dough bowl shows the lines from being hand turned, both inside and out, although more prevalent on the exterior. These are some of the tightest, finest lathe lines I have ever seen on a bowl, easier to feel them on the interior than see them, it must have taken a long time to create this beauty. When I first saw this bowl, there was much storage dirt on it so I couldn't tell it was Birdseye maple but after a gentle yet thorough cleaning, the eyes started to pop out of the wood. Although each side has only a couple of handfuls of eyes in various sizes, they are obvious enough to show this is Birdseye maple. The colors of the wood are varied, from deep browns to a lighter honey brown in the center but the entire bowl has a slight reddish tone so I wonder if the wood might be red maple, whatever the case, it is solid and very hard. I have never gotten my hands on one of these larger bowls before now, so I must say, I am quite taken by it's magnificence. The size of this antique bowl is an incredible 18 & 3/4 inches by 20 inches, wonderfully out of round, caused by the natural aging and drying of the wood. The outer upper rim is well defined with about a one inch lip, adding more dimension to this totally fascinating work of art. On the outer lip, there is a small area where the wood is flattened out a bit, visible in the 4th photo, looks pretty smoothed with age, certainly not offensive but rather adds a sense of mystery and character. This bowl sits tall at over 6 inches, more like 6 & 1/2. Now if the size isn't enough to get your attention, the condition certainly should. You will find no crack on this bowl, not even a slight hairline, really unusual for a bowl this size. You will see a small indentation in the interior bottom, a couple of other little divots but truly, they do not distract in the least or effect the bowl in any way. There is a dark spot here and there, primarily to the exterior, but I would have expected to find much more wear on a bowl of this magnitude, after all, it is antique. Rather, it appears to be only gently used and judging from it's fabulous condition, I would say it sat tucked away in great grandmother's pantry for the last 90 years or so. Whatever history goes with this bowl, you will be delighted with this rare and unusually large dough bowl. This heirloom, investment quality bowl is the best of it's type that I've seen in a long time, you will never regret owning it or passing it down to your next generation of antique dough bowl lovers.
