Antique Primitive 1800's New England Trencher Dough Bowl

Thank you for looking at this more traditionally shaped and wonderful primitive authentic New England trencher dough bread bowl.

This bowl was carved out from a single solid piece of wood during the second half of the 1800's. It has good weight but is not too heavy, it's more medium weight.

I acquired this primitive dough bowl from a recent Maine estate auction, it is an authentic trencher, shaped in the customary New England form. The coloring is very attractive with it's multiple brown tones throughout. There are darker and lighter areas, as well as a fair amount of chop marks along the sides, this bowl was used for chopping herbs and other food preparations. My photos are making it look severely stained, and although it is stained from a century of use, they are not as pronounced as they may appear in my pictures.  This bowl is very smoothed with age and the size is very useful and generous at nearly 20 inches in length by 10¼ in width and it sits steady at between 4 and 4¾ inches in height, having the common and desired age related warping.

As you can see, there is an old hole in the side edge that was used for hanging the bowl. The 1800's kitchens did not have extra room for bowls, so many of them had holes for hanging and keeping them out of the way. The exterior of the bowl has much character as well with it's darkned base, perhaps it sat atop the stove a few times, if only it could speak. Overall, this trencher is in excellent primitive condition, no cracks, hairlines or negatives. Other than good honest use, there is little to report, not even many nicks or bumps. It has a lot of fine qualities and is a beautiful piece of Americana workmanship. I have left the bowl as I acquired it, just a light cleaning, I find no reason to add anything to this well kept bowl. I love the shape, as well as the varying thickness to the wood around the outer perimeter, thins down nicely along the sides. This bowl is everything the collector would want in a New England trencher and will look great filled with an assortment of fresh fruit, dried flowers or use your imagination. Have fun decorating with this warm hand hewn dough trencher, it will blend well with your other primitive furnishings.
