This bowl was by far, "the prize" of the entire collection. I have been buying and selling vintage and primitive wood bowls for nearly two decades, this is the first Tiger maple dough bowl I have acquired, as they are quite difficult to come by in this quality condition and overall appearance. I tell you, when I placed it in my home, I couldn't stop staring at it for three days. It is an amazing visual delight and if you love wood like I do, you will be most pleased with this awesome and superior example of Americana workmanship. I believe this bowl was hand turned, although I see no obvious lathe lines either to the interior or exterior. The bowl is completely smoothed with age but my husband says he sees lines when he looks really close-up, I cannot see them. The bowl is silky smooth, it is radiant and glows with the look of satin with colors from golden honey tones to various rich reddish browns. No alterations have been made to this bowl, no permanent finish or stains applied, it is in it's natural wood state, cleaned and ready for use. The bowl has a fabulous shape, out of round from drying over many years, just like an old bowl should be. I believe my photos show all the fine characteristics so you may judge it for yourself. Another outstanding feature is it's generous size, measuring a large 16 by 15½ and sitting sturdy and deep at varying heights up to 5⅝ inches. I do believe this is the most irreplaceable bowl I have ever acquired.
This vintage New England Tiger maple dough bowl is in fabulous condition, no significant flaws, no chop or cut marks. As shown, the lower interior has some minor darkening from age and dough making but certainly nothing offensive. After four days of staring at and handling this bowl, I noticed a very small upper rim short hairline in the graining, very tight and almost impossible to notice on the interior lip, seen a bit on the exterior upon close scrutiny. In no way do these minor signs of age take anything away from this bowl, either in structural integrity or value. This bowl has been well cared for, well preserved and will be, once again, "the queen" when it graces your home or finds a place amongst your treasured accessories.
