Primitive Carved Trencher Dough Bowl, ca. 1800's

<<<< Back to Woodenware and Treenware

From a wonderful Ohio auction comes this exceptional primitive hand carved trencher chopping dough bowl.

Clearly this trencher was used for chopping grains, prior to making bread, like women had to do during the 1800's.

There is no denying that this bowl was hand hewn from a single log as some of the carvings remain visible.  This beautiful antique dough bowl has a smooth and silky feel, well worn through it's extensive decades of use.  There is plenty of evidence that this bowl was used for chopping, lots of cut markings, however, it remains in damage free condition, with no cracks or relevant flaws.  The wood carver was thoughtful to include a recessed handle at each end, on the backside of the bowl, as shown in the photo.   This medium weight bowl is structurally solid and it's one of the nicest primitive trenchers I've acquired in awhile.  I love the color tones of warm medium browns with touches of auburn and all the personality that this bowl exhibits, even the few little worm holes are indicative of it's wonderful age and appeal.

This trencher is in it's natural state, no added stains, finish or other alterations but I did clean off all the years of dirt and dust, bringing it to it's current glowing state.  The size is to be appreciated, measuring 28 inches in total length by about 11 in width and it sits sturdy at 4¼ in height.  My photos are good and show the true nature of this bowl, I know you will love it as I do.  It's a perfect antique primitive trencher for your harvest table, sideboard or kitchen Hoosier.  This one is a beauty and I know you will put it to good use, it's more than just a decorative accessory, it's very useful and easy to love.
