Antique New England Large Dough Bowl Pre 1900

<<<< Back to Woodenware and Treenware

During my recent hunt to find dough bowls, I acquired this hand turned beauty from an auction on the east coast of New England.

I am especially taken by it's depth, as most of these bowls, in this size, are not as deep as this one is.

My photos are showing the quality of the hard maple wood and the various deep browns tones, all the way from darker brown to a lighter honey brown.  The second photo shows these tones very well and the darkened areas that indicate some usage.  There are several cut marks in the bottom of the bowl but not too many at all, just enough to add character.  There are also a few Birdseye figures in the bowl, attesting to the maple wood and the graining is superb.  This terrific bowl has wonderful size, measuring generously at 16⅛ by 16⅝, perfectly out of round as it should be, a bit boat shaped and sitting sturdy at varying heights between 6 and 6½ inches, very deep and roomy, it's gorgeous.

The exterior has been turned with a ¾ inch outer perimeter lip and the bottom has a very well defined foot.  This bowl is in extra fine condition, it is crack free and shows no damages or problems.  In the photo below, you will see a couple of small areas, toward the exterior top of the bowl, that look like patches but they are not.  These are natural wood imperfections that actually look and feel like remnants of bark and very likely are.  These areas are visually very shallow and the bark appears to remain well attached.  Overall, this is a fabulous antique New England dough bowl that deserves the utmost of attention, it has had minimal usage and has been well cared for.  I do believe you will be pleased to add this treasure to your decorative accessories and it's so very useful.
