I do believe that this one is made of oak, it certainly has the graining of oak, good weight and the sturdiness to have survived so long and maintain it's marvelous condition. Obviously well cared for, it suffers from no real problems, only minor age appropriate usage marks. I estimate the age to be ca. 1900 but it could be a bit older, give or take a little in either direction. This big old basket has all the patina you would expect to find, as well as the old nails displaying the aging and oxidation that is desired on these old baskets. I'm showing you lots of photos, every side of the basket is being shown , bottom and interior so you can judge how really lovely this basket is and want to find a special place for it in your home.
I've used this basket at the holidays for many years, it's been a fabulous decorating accent but now I feel it's time for you to put it to use. You'll enjoy it's size and all the possible ways it can be decorated with each passing season. Last Christmas, I simply filled it with fresh pine branches and added a few birds, it was one of the most simplest yet beautiful decorations in the room and everyone was drawn to it. As you can see from the photos, it is very well made and includes a delightful oak bentwood bail handle, what a treat. I'm not sure that the cover was made at the same time as the basket but it shares equally in patina and looks almost as old as the basket. The plywood cover was hand made, a bit primitive in nature but someone needed a cover for this basket, so made one. It's perfect if you want to store something in the basket and keep out the dust.
The interior and bottom are in fine condition as well. Of course, this basket has a few bumps, bruises and minor aging flaws, after all, it is very old, but it is not falling apart by any means, neither is it apparently cracking or splitting, it is very stable with nothing to be really concerned about, it has been properly handled and well stored when not in use. It measures as follows: it's nearly 15 inches tall with the cover in place, 12 inches in diameter, that is, from side to side and the bail handle rises above the cover by 6½ inches. This basket will combine well with your creative personality, I know you'll enjoy it very much.
