A bit of history: the Roger Williams Silver Co. purchased the dies of the Howard Sterling Co. in approximately 1901 and became the successors of that company. In 1903 Roger Williams merged with the Mauser Mfg. Co. and the Hayes & McFarland Co. to form the Mt. Vernon Silversmiths Co. The business was bought in 1913 by Gorham. It would be safe to say that this set dates to around the 1901 - 1903 era, it certainly isn't newer than 1913, so I can confidently tell you this set is at least 100 years old. I tried hard to take pictures that wouldn't reflect everything but the set reflected my ceiling which gave it a flat finish. This set is very shiny and bright. I polished it up and it's beautiful. The hand mirror is unique, in that, it can be hung for shaving or make-up application. It measures 7¼ inches including the handle and has a diameter of 5⅞ inches with a 5 inch viewing surface. The mirror is snug inside the sterling, the handle is securely attached and there are only a very few (3) tiny shallow dimples on the surface of the sterling. These were difficult to capture but you should be able to see a couple of them in the 1st photo.
The clothes brushes are beautiful wardrobe accessories for overcoats, suits or pants. The bristles are complete and set into wood bases which are coated with a shiny enamel paint. The bristles and bases are in very nice condition for their age with the paint showing minimal wearing, here and there, on the larger brush. The sterling on the brushes are in lovely condition with just the expected light scratches and minor shallow dimple, nothing naughty or intrusive. The larger brush measures 7¼ in length, 2½ in width and the bristles are 1¼ inches. The small brush measures 5⅛ inches by 3¼ inches with ⅞ inch bristles. The larger brush is ever so slightly loose in the sterling but in no way is this brush coming out of it's fit. I think the wood base may have shrunk slightly because the sterling is flawless in it's attachment and everything looks great and functions normally. The original beveled mirror was unusable, so I replaced it with a quality beveled mirror just like the original, if I didn't tell you, one could not discern it is a replaced mirror, it looks delightful and fits perfectly. Please consider this stunning 3 piece American made sterling silver hand mirror and brush set from the very early 1900 era. And remember, this set has a highly polished and shiny finish, not the flat look that reflected in my photos, it's really beautiful and distinguished looking, a perfect man set in my opinion.
