It still maintains it's original rhinestones, clear and sparkling, as well as it's original screen and powder puff, in cleaned and refreshed condition.

Originally, when I acquired this compact, the make-up puff had a faded Mavco insignia on the top but after a gentle cleaning, the label faded a bit more and is no longer readable. Nonetheless, this is guaranteed to be a Mavco compact from the approx. mid 1940 era. I did some research and discovered that Malcolm Allen sold these compacts through the M.A. Vending Co. and he employed the designer Eleanor Hamlin. This particular compact has a predominant Art Deco sculpted design along with a perimeter border and central flower of sparkling rhinestones. Mavco's signature compacts were made if sturdy plastics, which included Lucite and Plexiglass. This is what I have found out about this company and it's products. Overall, I consider this 70 year old compact to be in lovely, gently used, yet well maintained condition. There are some small scuffs and scratches but nothing naughty at all, in fact, you will have to tip the compact to the lighting to see this. The rhinestones are is very nice acceptable condition, lots of life and sparkle, with very little wear or dulling to the stones, hardly none.

I'm going to show you a ton of photos because this is really an attractive compact and I want you to discover how wonderful it would look in your collection. Personally, I think this compact is either Lucite or celluloid but I did not find that Mavco made celluloid compacts so I believe it is likely Lucite. It is a marvelous translucent deep rich auburn amber variegated swirling pattern along with lighter golden hues. This compact has a lot of depth so there is plenty of room for your favorite loose powder to lay under the sifter. Both the sifter and the powder puff have been washed and are essentially cleaned and refreshed. I have examined this compact thoroughly, under magnification, I find no cracks, serious scratches or significant flaws that would take from it's value.

The puff still maintains the aroma of it's previous powder but it's so nice to have the original puff for added value in your collection. The puff is recommended for display purposes only. In my opinion, the screen is usable. The original beveled make-up mirror is in solid condition and still shows a good image but does have some early signs of fogging but not horrible for 70 years old. You can see in the photo to the left that the Mavco crown insignia is still on the puff. Inside the crown would read the letters MAVCO, however, they have faded. I love the entire shape of this compact, it is classic Art Deco and exemplified that era perfectly.

These 2 photos show each end of the compact. The photo to the left shows the elusive design of the clasp. It is sculpted in the same angled Art Deco pattern that runs throughout the compact and it takes a little practice to get used to opening it. The closure works as it should and the compact stays closed. The other photo shows the hinge, all in excellent condition. There is a tiny bit of roughness at the top edge, near the hinge, but in person it is barely noticeable compared to my photo. My overhead lighting reflected off the edge and made it look much worse than it is. You will be pleasantly surprised when you see that this tiny bit of roughness is original to the compact, it is not damaged and it's hardly that visible unless you want to inspect it close-up. This lovely vintage 1940's Mavco powder compact measures a little over 3 inches long by 2 inches wide and has inch of depth. Please enjoy or gift this marvelous example of a Mavco powder compact, it's in nicely kept condition, with a wonderful warm appearance, it would look great with a Lucite vintage purse.
