This distinguished handbag displays like a finely woven silk brocade. I am not an expert on fabrics but this is what the purse appears to be. I don't really know how to describe this rather unique pattern, so I'll let my photos do that for me, as they represent the purse very well. The photos that were taken under lighting, show the reflective gold background thread and these photos show the purse correctly, with it's attractive sheen. I have seen a lot of silk purses in my days but never one in such incredible condition. You would think there might be a few flaws or splits at the creases but this purse is nearly pristine. The only thing I might mention is the possibility of some very minor fading to the front side of the purse and that isn't all that obvious. This purse has withstood the test of time, as well as a professional cleaning, which only removed the natural elements that a purse will absorb over a hundred years of time. The purse's fabric suffers no tears, splits, snags or serious issues, in fact, I find the condition to be amazing.
The frame is a masterpiece in Art Nouveau workmanship. I believe the metal is brass and when I cleaned the purse, I polished the frame but just enough to bring out it's intricate and elaborate details. Both sides of this frame are enhanced with full bodied Art Nouveau ladies that look like they are emerging from cornucopias. They have their arms extended around a central shield which has a basket of flowers flanked by birds. On the front side of the purse, there is also a strong presence of glass jewels in the ruby and blue tones, as well as a scattering of faux pearls. Both sides of the frame are alike but the jewels are only on the front side. Under magnification, it appears that a few of the ruby stones may have been replaced but everything looks great and there is little, if anything, missing from this frame. The clasp is the push down to open type and functions well, closing the purse with a solid snap. As shown, the pattern covers all sides of this purse and even the dual colored twisted piping that connects the front and backsides is in exceptional condition. The interior is lined with a fine quality satin. It has a large pocket on one side and a split dual sided pocket on the other. The lining is in lovely condition and only has a little discolor here and there, just age related, not abuse, the lining is quite nice. The last photo shows the backside of the purse, it's magnificent frame and it's original chatelaine chain, which was meant to hang from a belt hook. It is very unusual to find a chatelaine purse in the evening bag form and generously sized. Stuffed with tissue this purse measures 5 inches in height, about 9 in width, 6 inches across the frame, the side gusset is 1½ inches and the carry handle drops the purse by approx. 8 inches. Of course, you can carry this purse over the arm as an evening bag and it will carry a fair amount of accessories for you. Thank you for taking the time to look at this remarkable antique Art Nouveau chatelaine evening purse. I do believe it's next owner will be quite thrilled with it.
