German silver is a base metal alloy consisting of nickel, copper and zinc. There is no silver content in it whatsoever. The name was coined because the metal is silvery in color and polishes to a shine, mimicking sterling. The body of this purse shows the mesh to be linked in two directions, first running horizontally, then vertically, then back to horizontal before the bottom fringe. All of the mesh appears to be in extra fine condition, no holes or detached links that I have found. The mesh is secure at the hinges, all about the frame and drapes with a pleated form. When I acquired this mesh purse, it was very tarnished, so I took my time to clean and polish it for your future enjoyment. It is in splendid bright condition with only remnants of tarnish here and there, primarily in the deeper crevices of the frame. The bottom of this handbag maintains all of it's original eleven little metal balls, an attractive feature of this purse. The frame is a work of art, it is very heavily embossed with some of the nicest detailing I have seen a awhile. I'm showing you good close-ups of the frame so you can judge how really dynamic this frame is. It's a very sturdy frame, opens and closes with a solid snap and is perfectly aligned. The chain link handle is equally as strong and suits the bag rather well. This purse is in superior condition, the perfect gift for the collector. Inspection of the frame discloses it's Art Nouveau roots, there is no debating it's age. I can't remember the last time I've seen such a great German silver frame and it is identical on both sides. The interior is signed and hallmarked with what looks like an anchor. I am not familiar with this hallmark and have not found any references about it's origins. The interior of this purse is unlined. If you would like a lining sewn in this purse, I will include a lining for the asking price of $325.00. I have a lot of experience relining purses and I currently have some lovely vintage bright silver fabric that would enhance this handbag with class. I always recommend a lining in a mesh bag that you intend to carry. This antique mesh purse measures 9½ inches from the top of clasp to the bottom of the balls by 7½ across the hinges and the chain handle drops 7 inches. It is a large purse, very stylish, very beautiful, I can't imagine that anyone wanting a purse like this would be disappointed.
