During the preview of the estate, I was the first to unwrap this purse in 7 decades. I am happy to report that all the petit point items I purchased from this estate were well stored in a climate controlled room, leaving behind only untouched beauty. The original owner had visited Austria many times between the 1930's and the 1950's, bringing back exquisite petit point each time. Unlimited and exhaustive hours went into the making of this purse, sporting at least 40 stitches to the inch, or 1600 to the square inch, very difficult to count them even under magnification. Constructed in the box style with brass framing, this is a very rare and hard to find purse and the condition is all you could possibly hope for, showing only some very minor natural aging to the brass in a couple of small places. My photos are true to the nature of this handbag, having a myriad of floral colors, all appearing perhaps a little softer in tone than what is showing but not faded at all. You will notice that the entire purse is covered in micro petit point, front and back are alike. The floral center is framed with an inset border of tiny petit point rosettes. The dual handles have petit point insets on both sides of each handle. The clasp, top, bottom and sides are all banded with petit point as well, simply remarkable and quite stunning. When you lift the clasp and pull the front handle forward, this handbag opens, on a piano hinge, to reveal a perfect "unused" interior lined in what looks like a black faille fabric. There are several compartments inside, one side opens like an envelope. There are spaces for your compact, money, credit cards, etc. and there is a comb in it's own slot. This fascinating petit point purse measures 5 & 3/8 in height by nearly 8 & 1/2 in width, the side is 1/2 in depth and the handles rise by 1 & 3/4 inches. I have been trying to acquire one of these elusive box styled petit point bags for a long time but I never thought I'd find one in perfect, never used condition. I don't expect that I will see another for a very long time so if this one tickles your fancy, grab it while it's available, it's a treasure.
