Both sides of this handbag exhibit the same scene and my photos are excellent, showing you exactly what to expect to receive. The visual aspects of this purse are quite appealing with a grand mountainous terrain in the background, a country styled cottage, a flowing stream and the shepherd tending to his flock in the foreground. The color palette is soft and serene, very pretty indeed and you will see some differences in the use of color from one side of the purse to the other, for example the trees. The stitch count on this micro petit point bag is 40 stitches to the inch, that is, 1600 stitches to the square inch. This purse is a stunning work of art, it's hard to find these tiny stitched earlier purses in such nice preserved condition. This purse has been in a private collection for a long time and has been properly cared for and has had minimal usage, actually not much at all, if any.
There is a lot of dimension to the scene, the close-up photos are true to life, you will not be disappointed in this marvelous handbag. My photos are showing all the details, colors and depth of tone exactly as they are, as well as the tight stitches and the overall exquisite condition. This purse was made during the very late 1800's to the early 1900's. This is a smaller handbag, which was the more predominant size during the later Victorian era. Stuffed with tissue, it measures 5 inches in height, 6½ across the bottom, 5¼ inches across the frame, the outer perimeter band is ¾ of an inch and the French styled chain carry handle drops the purse by 6 inches. The gold tone frame has the French attribute of being overlaid with an orange red marbleized celluloid. I believe my photos show this feature very well. Both sides of the frame are the same and the curvy golden clasp folds over the frame and closes snugly. The frame, clasp and hinges are in solid working order and the purse is well attached to the frame at all points, it's very secure. I am showing a small hairline, in the celluloid, on the backside of the frame, at the corner, which runs down the arm of the frame a little at the very edge. I was unable to get a clear photo of this flaw in it's entirety, the fact is, it is very hard to even notice it. The celluloid in this area is very stable, it is not separating from the frame, nor is it apparently weak or coming apart in any way. This is a very tight hairline. If you can forgive this flaw, you will enjoy owning an incredibly well made and intricately patterned antique micro petit point purse. The outer perimeter band on the purse is quite charming and presents a pleasant contrasting effect on the purse. The deep burgundy piping is also in exceptional condition. The original beige faille fabric lining is in extra fine condition, with dual pockets and the matching small change purse is a useful accessory. I really don't detect that this purse was carried much at all, no signs of usage to the lining or the purse, just a wee signs of natural aging to the petit point, a little discolor at the top edge by the frame but no splitting to the stitches, no wearing, snags or other problems that I can detect.
I am very pleased with this purse, it is an extremely wonderful example of ultra fine petit point. This purse has a medium stiff hand but not too stiff, this purse just simply has not been handled much, it truly is marvelous. I have done nothing to this purse but admire it. It is relatively clean and needs no attention or repair. The last 2 photos show each side of the purse. This vintage micro petit point evening handbag is a treasure to be respected and appreciated. It's a form of art that few are capable of accomplishing today, I know you will love it and give it deserving care.
