The detail and hand stitching on this purse is amazing, I can't imagine the time it must have taken to bring this masterpiece to completion. My photos are showing the scene and the colors very well, they are bright, without fading and the extensive use of color is marvelous. The scene exhibits 6 children, I cannot detect wings on any of them so we have no cherubs here. I believe the two children under the tree, with flowers in their hair, are girls. They seem to be feeding apples to possibly a tiger, as he seems to be spotted or striped. There are two boys to their right, playing with and sitting on a 10 point buck. There are two more boys picking apples from in the tree above. Look how darling this workmanship is, it's so unusual to see children worked into a micro petit point purse, surely this is a very special vintage handbag. I am going to be generous with my photos, as I want you to see all aspects of this handbag and judge it as the treasure it really is. I haven't counted the stitches per inch but they are the very tiny ones and they are very tight, some of the smallest . Both sides of this purse are identical and pictured, if there are any differences, I have not noticed it. Both the front and back panels are in extra nice condition, having no losses, stains, damages or negatives that I have found. These panels are not perfectly flush with the purse, they have been made with a gentle bulge, a little more on the backside, likely to allow for some interior flexibility. These panels have been backed by something that keeps them completely stationary and well attached to the frame. The brassy framing is very sturdy on this purse, strong and supportive. It has a very nice aged patina and does show some of it's age. It's taken on that color of older brass, in areas, but it is not badly dented up or distorted, it might have a subtle dent or bump but nothing very apparent or noticeable. The two handles and their hinges are in very good condition. One handle is purposely made with a slight curve, so it will reach over and join with the other handle for ease of carrying. The fold over clasp is a classic in Austrian design with it's pierced open work, it measures 1¼ inches wide by ⅝ in depth and is in excellent working order. It is presented in silver plating, as is a common metal distinction on the Austrian purses. The purse closes with a good snap and functions on a sturdy piano hinge, which discretely spans the length of the bottom of the purse. Many of these features are shown in my photos, so please study them well as they are part of my description.
You can see that the entire purse is nearly covered in micro petit point, both sides of both handles, all around the edges of the main panels and all around the outer perimeter, even on the bottom. These petit point floral accents are in very good condition but the top upper border, about an inch away from the clasp, shows the only small discolor that I have noticed on the exterior of this purse. I do believe you can see this in the picture above, it's right below where the handles meet, it is small and not very visible. And check out the photo below, one of the boys in the tree has heart shaped lips.
The interior lining shows that it has been used, it has usage marks but this purse has not been abused. I have cleaned this purse to the best of my ability, bringing out all the fine colors and lightening up the discolorations on the lining, such as a couple of small lipstick smudges near the lipstick slot. The purse, for the most part is in clean condition, with no odors. The interior has multiple pockets and at least two other slim compartments. However, keeping in mind that this box purse is very shallow, having only ⅝ of an inch in depth, it is not designed to carry very much. In fact, even though it appears to be roomy, it is made to carry very little, a compact or two, a comb, a lipstick, some form of money and perhaps a hanky. The overall size measures 8¼ from side to side, 5 inches from top to bottom and the handles rise up nearly 2 inches, giving the total height 7 inches. If you must carry this purse, you will have to leave your keys and cell phone home. Of course, being a purse lover, I am hoping this incredibly fabulous and rare Austrian micro petit point figural scenic purse will be added to your collection, where it will remain cared for and preserved for another 80 years or more.
