This super large dough bowl was hand hewn from a large single log and then smoothed down for optimum appeal. The wood worker was quite talented, as you will recognize when you see this bowl. After a gentle yet thorough cleaning, this bowl now radiates with beauty. The colors of the wood are varied, from a lighter to more deeper medium brown tones. This is the first time I have acquired such a large elongated bowl, measuring a huge 26 inches in total length by 16½ in width and sits steady at varying heights between 4¼ and 5 inches depending on where you measure. I must say, I am quite taken by it's magnificence. Overall, the condition is spectacular. In the 3rd photo, it looks like there could be a crack at the edge of the bowl but not so, it's really a vein in the wood that is darker than the surrounding wood. The 4th and 5th photos do show a small flaw at the edge, where the bowl must have stressed from drying, although not the typical stress line and it doesn't go through the bowl or down into the bowl, it's more of a horizontal surface stress. It appears that it has been repaired with a small wood pin or dowel and seems to be very stable, surely will not worsen and really is not significantly noticeable. The outer upper rim is well defined with more shapelier ends and then the wood narrows nice and thin along the sides, very attractive and adds more dimension to this totally fascinating work of art. The bowl, overall, is in extra fine condition, a little discoloration in the bottom and few scratches and nicks but for the most part, this bowl is amazing. I don't see anything that distracts in the least or effects the value or integrity of the bowl in any way. I would have expected to find much more wear on a bowl of this magnitude and age. Rather, it appears to be in respectfully used condition and well cared for, someone adored this bowl and it shows it. Whatever history goes with this bowl, you will be delighted with this rare and unusually large dough bowl, it's a grand bowl for your harvest table. The interior is in a more natural state, while the exterior seems to have been waxed or had some other similar finish applied, as it has a shine but has not been overly applied. This heirloom, investment quality bowl is one of the best of it's type that I've seen, you will never regret owning it or passing it down to your next generation of antique dough bowl lovers.
