Antique Beehive Hand Turned Dough Bowl

<<<< Back to Woodenware and Treenware

I'm so excited to offer you this unusual and one of a kind, pre 1900, hand turned dough bowl with old worn color remaining.

I recently acquired this bowl from a mid western auction and I must say it is so very wonderful and unique, it has captured my heart.

The wood is quite hard and solid, it has wavy tight growth lines and I am fairly sure it is made of maple.  The shade of the wood is a deep and rich reddish brown, beautiful and warm.  The contour of this dough bowl is fabulously out of round and is somewhat boat shaped, really great figure on this bowl caused from natural aging, showing well in the first and last photos.  The size is a treat as well measuring generously at 16⅞ by17⅜ inches and it sits straight and sturdy at varying heights between 4 and 4¾ inches.  The interior is in extra fine condition, having cut marks but not very many, and some darkened areas, as shown, all adding personality and style to this well used treasure.  There is a surface craze line on the top edge, this is not a crack, it's really nothing at all.  There is a small old hole toward the upper rim that was used for hanging and all minor imperfections are visible in my photos.

This bowl was hand turned on a lathe which is recognizable both on the inside and out.  The shape of the turnings on the exterior are marvelous, looks like a Beehive bowl.  I believe my photos show this characteristic quite well so you may judge it for yourself.  Another exquisite feature of this rare bowl is the remaining old colorings, which could be paint but I am not 100% sure, or could be a stain.  In any case, it is very smooth with age and worn in varying degrees, however, there is still much color remaining, it looks fantastic and original.  The ¾ inch upper lip has remnants of a pale red tone and the remainder of the bowl has a slate gray greenish blue tone.  I do believe this is one of the most irreplaceable bowls I have ever acquired, surely there is not another like it.  The collector of these antique turned wood bowls will be delighted with this one.
